Create, edit, and share videos in a flash
Intel® Quick Sync Video makes fast work of creating, editing,
synchronizing, and sharing your videos–at home and online– without the
expense of additional hardware.
Intel Quick Sync Video, built right into 2nd
generation Intel® Core™ processors, is breakthrough hardware
acceleration that lets you complete in minutes what used to take
hours. Create DVDs or Blu-ray* discs, edit videos, convert video files
for your portable media player, and convert videos for upload to your
favorite social networking sites–all in a flash.
PCs with Intel Quick Sync Video can convert HD
video content for a handheld device twice as fast as PCs based on
previous generation Intel® Core™ processors.¹ Instead of waiting for
your video, your video is waiting for you.
The best laptop power settings depend on whether you're using the
battery or plugging into an outlet. Both Windows* and Mac* operating
systems (OSs) have tools that will help you to extend your laptop's
battery life while getting the best performance when plugged in.
These tools will allow your laptop to turn off certain components or
enter standby or hibernation mode after a predetermined period of
inactivity. Generally speaking, settings that save power will
decrease your laptop's performance while settings that use more
power will improve performance.
The monitor uses more energy than any other component on your
laptop, so setting your monitor to turn off after only a few minutes
of inactivity is an excellent strategy for saving power. You should
set your laptop to turn off the hard disk drive (HDD) after a period
of inactivity between 15 minutes and one hour. System standby turns
your laptop's monitor and HDD off and saves your open data to RAM.
Hibernation also puts your computer into a low-power state saving
your open programs and files to the hard drive. Both of these
"sleep" states can save a lot of laptop power. That said, keep in
mind that hibernation requires a significant amount of free space.
Mac OS X* has an Energy Saver pane enabling you to keep your Mac
laptop from consuming too much power. Like Windows, Mac OS can turn
off your laptop's monitor and HDD when the computer is inactive. Mac
OS X's sleep mode places the computer in a low-power mode until you
choose to wake it up. The energy-saving settings in Mac OS X are
different than the ones in Windows. For example, you can tell your
Mac to turn off the hard disk, but not when to turn them off. Both
Mac OS X and Windows Vista* provide an option for dimming the
brightness on your laptop display.
Laptop power settings in Windows XP*
 | Click Start > Control Panel
> Performance and Maintenance > Power
Options |
 | Select the Max Battery power scheme from the
drop-down menu |
 | Change the settings to maximize your laptop's power savings.
|
 | Set the time that the computer should turn off the monitor and
hard disk |
 | Choose the settings for standby or
hibernation mode. To save the most battery power, reduce
these settings below their default values and click Apply
|
 | Select Portable/Laptop from the power scheme
drop-down list. Adjust these settings for times when your laptop
will be plugged into a power outlet. For best results, set the
display to turn off after only a few minutes of inactivity. |
 | Adjust the settings for other power management options so that
your laptop will wait at least an hour to turn off the hard drive
or go to sleep. This will allow for the best possible system
performance for your laptop. |
Laptop power settings in Windows
Vista*
 | Click Start > Control Panel
> System and Maintenance > Power Options
|
 | Click Select a Power Plan. |
 | Choose Power Saver to conserve the most
battery power |
 | Choose Balanced or High Performance
if you plan to plug your laptop into a power outlet |
 | Click Choose when to turn off the display. In
the next window, change the settings for when your laptop's
monitor should turn off and select when the computer should go to
sleep. For the greatest battery power savings, choose times
between five and 15 minutes. For best performance, choose times
between 30 minutes and one hour. |
 | Then click Change Advanced Plan Settings and
click the plus sign next to Battery to adjust
settings for the Power Saver power plan. Choose what you want
Vista to do when the battery is low or critical. Hibernate is your
best option if you have plenty of hard drive space. However, if
you choose Shut Down from the drop-down menu,
make sure you save your work often when your laptop is on battery
power. |
 | Click Start > Control Panel
> Mobile PC and select Windows Mobility
Center and use the slider to adjust your display's
brightness settings. This will conserve power without turning off
your monitor entirely. You can also monitor your battery status in
Windows Mobility Center. |
Laptop power settings in Mac OS X*
 | Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences
|
 | Under Hardware, click Energy Saver and select
the Sleep tab. Adjust the sliders to choose when
you want the computer and the display to go to sleep. To conserve
battery power, keep both settings low. To maximize performance,
move the sliders as far to the right as possible. |
 | Check the box next to Put the hard disks to sleep when
possible and click the Options tab.
Select whether you'd like the computer to wake up after events
such as a modem ring, and whether display brightness should be
reduced before the display turns off. You can also use options to
show battery status in the menu bar. |
 | Adjust the processor performance. Choose Reduced
if you're using battery power. |
 | Choose Highest if you're plugged in or choose
Automatic to let Mac OS X manage processor
performance for you. |
By using these tips, you can avoid running out of laptop battery
power at critical moments and avoid the inconvenience of reduced
performance when plugged into the power grid.
3D Your PC
Immerse yourself with full HD stereo 3D viewing right on your PC,
Entertainment technology comes in more flavors than we could have
dreamed a few years ago. An entertainment PC combines everything a
regular computer can do—e-mail, Web, etc.—with the best of digital
entertainment. Some of these new PCs look like a traditional
receiver you would find in your stereo cabinet—yet others are
smaller sized PCs that take up little space, standing vertically.
Following are some of the fun things you can do. Make sure you
talk with your sales person to ensure your new computer does some or
all of the following:
 | Record, rewind, and pause TV (even live TV) with the digital
video recorder capabilities and incur no monthly fee. |
 | Listen to music from an online radio station and other
streaming sources, MP3s, or your CD collection. |
 | Use standard PC functions like e-mail, the Web, and
productivity applications. |
 | Play the hottest games on your TV. |
 | Share and organize your photos using your TV screen, not the
small monitor on your PC. |
Great Gaming, Built-in
Get awesome performance for mainstream gaming with Intel I7—no
extra hardware needed.
Despite the popularity of the Nintendo Wii* and other gaming
consoles, the PC is still a great platform for games, with millions
of devoted players, and lots of new titles coming out each year. But
today's graphically complex games call for a wide variety of
high-performance hardware. Choosing the right game-friendly PC can
be a daunting experience, unless you know what to look for.
Some hardcore gamers build their machines at home. But the
majority of us who don't have time or just want to choose the right
computer for a gaming enthusiast in our lives generally prefer to
order a computer online and have it built just the way we want it.
If you want a computer that provides a good environment for video
games, take a look at this PC gaming checklist, which covers all the
essentials, before you go shopping
Getting the Lay of the Land
The term "freeware" typically refers strictly to software that is
offered without cost, with no strings attached. That makes it
different from these types of software:
 | Commercial software is the familiar type of
software sold in stores or over the Internet, typically for a
one-time fee. |
 | Trial software is a way for commercial software companies to
let you try their software without cost, hoping you will buy the
full version later. It may not have the full functionality of the
regular version, and it typically stops working after a set number
of uses or period of time. |
 | Shareware is available for use initially for
free, but you'll be asked to pay a fee if you find it useful or
after a certain number of uses or period of time. Payment for
shareware is often based on the "honor system," meaning that the
software won't actually stop working if you don't pay for it. |
