How do you Manage, Support and Repair a Real Server? ■ Management refers to the implementation of tools, strategies and processes to receiveadvance warning of component degradation or failure that may result or has resulted in server downtime, and the use of appropriate services and tools to support that function. ■ Support and Repair encompasses the range of services and tasks associated with replacingor repairing components, and the use of appropriate services and tools to support that function. What needs to be Managed in a Real Server Based on Intel Xeon Processors? Within the context of a complete solution, the server exists as a collection of software components (applications and operating system) running on a hardware platform consisting of Intel® Server Products such as a chassis, server board, add-in cards and other third-party peripherals. Real servers based on Intel Xeon processors incorporate industry standard technologies that support varying levels of management to meet specific customer needs. Intel provides a range of software tools to monitor the hardware for management purposes thereby promoting server availability and dependability. When Does Server Management Need to Occur? ■ When the server is running, it is necessary to monitor the status of critical components, generate alerts if they fail or show signs of degrading and provide access to related information By effectively monitoring component status and generating alerts when thresholds are exceeded the integrator is able to apply preventative actions to keep the server up and running. ■ When a the server is showing signs of degradation or is down, it is necessary to efficientlyisolate the fault, diagnose the problem and repair the condition. Real servers based on Intel Xeon processors can include a high level of management that allows remote access to a server for the purpose of diagnosing faults even when the operating system is not functional. Recommended Repair and Replacement Procedures—Intel ® SMaRT ToolThe key to maintaining and repairing servers quickly is a good set of tools, and not necessarily a good screw driver (which doesn’t hurt), but reference tools. Server systems are typically more complex than a standard desktop system so they require more detailed reference tools such as online tutorials, parts databases and support information. Intel provides detailed product information on its support website http://support.intel.com, but also provides a CD-ROM calledthe Intel® SMaRT (Server Maintenance and Reference Training) Tool that is an excellent resource for all levels of technicians and engineers. The Intel SMaRT Tool is a CD-ROM containing comprehensive repair and maintenance information to assist in servicing, training and marketing over 50 Intel-based server products in ten languages. Integrators can use the interactive support tool when they don’t have access to the web, showing detailed steps on how to repair Intel® Server Products, valuable product replacement instructions, including Intel® Customer Support phone numbers worldwide. Because it is a stand-alone CD-ROM, integrators can also utilize the tool to promote Intel® Server Products with the Virtual System Tours section when presenting to their potential customers. Intel SMaRT Tool integrates with Intel® Server Management (ISM) so integrators can be notified remotely of a failing system, locate the exact failed part, instantly connect to the how-to-replace section within Intel SMaRT Tool, get replacement ordering information from the parts database and link directly to support information, including phone numbers and AWR email submittal. The Intel SMaRT Tool features new technical and marketing information sections, along with new System Modules and Virtual System Tours on six of the latest Intel® Server Products. As always, Intel SMaRT Tool provides advanced notification of upcoming System Modules, and allows for easy downloads to make supporting Intel-based servers simpler. The Intel SMaRT Tool CD-ROM is available for FREE online at www.intel.com/go/smart or viaphone 800-548-4725 (NA); +1-303-675-2148 (International). Request SKU# 283802. Spares Forecasting Tools As a result of the high cost of server downtime, many customers demand rapid service that is not possible without keeping critical backup components in close proximity to operating hardware. In a recent survey2, service and availability were two of the top three server customer concerns. Intel has a set of spares programs designed to reduce server downtime and increase customer satisfaction. The Intel® Server Parts storefront on Shop IntelSM allows integrators to buy spares, accessories, and discontinued parts direct to keep in stock or use for mission-critical support. With easy credit card ordering and three shipping options, including overnight delivery*, the storefront enables integrators to quickly repair servers with new parts instead of waiting for warranty replacement. The storefront features over 90 Intel Server Parts, including cables, fans, I/O shields, and power supplies. Another option to provide quick repair, are Intel® Spares Kits. Intel Spares Kits provide a set of individually wrapped, backup chassis electronics and cables that can be used to quickly replace failed parts and reduce expensive server downtime. The components included within Intel Spares Kits enable the possibility of cost-effective, same-day service and added confidence in the high availability of servers built with Intel® Server Products. Finally, Intel provides the Intel® Spares Estimation Tool to obtain recommended spares stocking levels based on product codes and inventory levels the integrator selects. It’s an easy way to forecast spares inventory enabling integrators to search by product, enter months of inventory, and the server population they support. Based on inputs, the tool produces a complete table of spare parts and recommended stocking levels. When used in conjunction with the Intel Server Parts storefront on Shop Intel, integrators can keep their own, complete warranty warehouse. 7 White Paper How to Manage, Support and Repair a Real Server Based on Intel® Xeon™ Processors 2 Source: Intel Corporation, November 2002
